William Churchill Houston, 1746-1788

William Churchill Houston was born ca. 1746 in Sumter District, South Carolina, the son of Archibald and Margaret Houston. His family moved to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, ca. 1753. He attended college in New Jersey and remained there. He was "professor of mathematics and natural philosphy at the Princeton College, captain of infantry in the War of the Revolution, deputy secretary of the Continental Congress, member of the legislature of New Jersey, and also of the Continental Congress, and a delegate to the convention which framed the constitution of the United States. He was also Clerk of the Supreme Court of New Jersey, and an eminent lawyer." He married Jane Smith, daughter of Rev. Caleb Smith, of St. George's Manor, Long Island. They had two sons and three daughters. He died in 1788 near Philadelphia, while on a trip south. She died in 1796 at age 41.
