Musician Adam Anker lives sparingly with his 20-year-old daughter Miriam in Auckland, New Zealand. While exploring a local Holocaust exhibit, he happens upon a display bearing his family name and a contact, Clara Fried. Puzzled and inspired by this unexpected find, he commits the woman's name to memory. Tragically, on that same day Miriam dies in an accident, sending Adam spiraling into depression. One year later, Adam contacts Mrs. Fried and travels to Poland to discover the true fate of his parents. But an equally important journey awaits--a trip to Sweden to reconcile with Miriam's mother, Cecilia.
