ABC News Nightline. [1981-09-11], Black America

"A look at blacks in America today through the eyes of three black Americans who, as children, played key roles in the civil rights campaign. Also, a tribute to Roy Wilkins, the civil rights leader who died earlier this week at the age of 80"--Supplemental materials. Using archival footage, photographs, and interviews, this program looks at black civil rights and what progress black Americans believe they have made and what still needs to be accomplished for blacks to achieve equality. The opening segment of the program takes a look at four generations of the descendants of Tim and Easter Benton, discussing with a member of each generation what their experiences have been with racism and civil rights and how far they think they have come in the struggle for equality. Ted Koppel then has a discussion with Ernest Green, Charlayne Hunter-Gault, and James Meredith, asking them how much progress has been made in black civil rights since the 1960's?, how much farther is there to go?, and what will the next civil rights leader need to be successful? The guests also discuss the different types of struggles facing blacks today, such as blacks in upper management and high office, and also talk about the continuing struggle that poor blacks are facing. The program ends with a tribute to Roy Wilkins, including footage from his funeral, with Leontyne Price singing the Battle hymn of the republic and footage from several of Wilkins' 1960's civil rights speeches.
