The awkward age : a novel

James had conceived of The Awkward Age to be a coming of age story for a young girl in an elite and decadent social circle. However, as with much of James' work it quickly became a commentary on more than just the character.

  • "The Awkward Age (1899), written at a time when female emancipation and the double standard were subjects of fierce debate, is the most remarkable example of James's dramatic method. The novel traces the experiences of 18-year-old Nanda Brookenham, exposed to corruption in the salon of her youthful, 'modern' mother, who, in maintaining a circle where talk is shockingly sophisticated, 'must sacrifice either her daughter or...her intellectual habits'. Does Nanda reach maturity and self-knowledge in the lively company of handsome, genial Vanderbank, whom she loves, and of ugly, intelligent, parvenu Mitchy, who loves her? Or is she a symbol of sterile idealism, as she clings to old Mr Longdon, with his memories of Nanda's grandmother, and of an aristocracy once untouched by money-troubles and dubious French novels?"

  • "It is the tale of Nanda Brookenham, a young society woman whose attempts at marriage are foiled by various members of her mother's social circle -- and, ultimately, by her own mother. Nanda's manipulative mother, Fernanda, is the hostess of a fashionable London salon. Nanda is befriended by the elderly Mr. Longdon -- an old-fashioned man enters a tangled web of wealthy British fashionable types, makes a proposal. ... The two women both appear to love Gustavus Vanderbank, a young government employee, who becomes alienated from them. The relationship between Vanderbank, a complicated but good-natured young man who has managed to penetrate that affluent circle, and Nanda Brookenham, the granddaughter of Longdon's lost love dominate the tale powerfully and compellingly. ..."@en

  • "The Awkward Age is a novel by Henry James, first published as a serial in Harper's Weekly in 1898-1899 and then as a book later in 1899. Originally conceived as a brief, light story about the complications created in her family's social set by a young girl coming of age, the novel expanded into a general treatment of decadence and corruption in English fin de siècle life. James presents the novel almost entirely in dialogue, an experiment that adds to the immediacy of the scenes but also creates serious ambiguities about characters and their motives.-- Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclo."@en
  • "The innocent but independent-minded Nanda Brookenham, being groomed as a potential bride by her less than sympathetic parents, is saved from the scheming circle of people around her by an elderly bachelor who rescues her out of loyalty to her grandmother. A sense of danger haunts this spellbinding story of a virtuous girl and the English marriage market."

  • "Adolescence and the transition to adulthood are difficult periods for most people, but the stakes are even higher when you''re a well-born young woman at the center of a complex and morally suspect social circle. That''s the dilemma facing young Nanda Brookenham in Henry James'' The Awkward Age, a dialogue-driven novel that some critics rank among the writer''s most accomplished literary feats."@en
