"In his three November 2007 interview with Robert Lange, David Hayman discusses his youth in Pelham, NY, his stint in the US Navy, his extensive travels in Europe, and his teaching experiences at Texas, Iowa, and Wisconsin. He outlines the influences that led him to study James Joyce at the Sorbonne, details the contacts he has made with editors, writers, and critics throughout his careers, and gives his opinion on the past and current state of UW's humanities programs. Other topics dealt with extensively include: descriptions of Paris and France; Hayman's relationship with his wife and children; poetry; teaching style and students; chairmanship; hitchhiking; literary figures and journals.
