  • "Vol. 28."@en
  • "An account of a two-week boat and hiking trip from Concord, Mass., to the White Mountains of New Hampshire."@en
  • "A week on the Concord and Merrimack rivers is both a remembrance of an intensely spiritual moment in Henry David Thoreau's life and a memoriam to his older brother who accompanied him on the trip shortly before his death. Full of fascinating literary musings and philosophical speculations, this book is a true precursor to Walden."
  • "A compelling travel narrative and a meditation on loss, time, and history, A Week on the Concord and Merrimac Rivers was written three years after the death of Thoreau's brother, John, with whom he made the 1839 river voyage. This account of their journey shares many themes with Thoreau's classic Walden , exploring self-renewal in nature, spirituality, culture, politics, and religion."
  • "Henry David Thoreau's four full-length works about the exploration of nature in New England from rivers in Massachusetts to woods in Maine."@en
  • "Thoreau's account of his 1839 boat trip is a finely crafted tapestry of travel writing, essays, and lyrical poetry. Thoreau interweaves descriptions of natural phenomena, the rural landscape, and local characters with digressions on literature and philosophy, the Native American and Puritian histories of New England, the Bhagavad Gita, the imperfections of Christianity, and many other subjects. Although it shares many of the themes in Thoreau's classic WALDEN, A WEEKoffers an alternative perspective on his analaysis of the relationship between nature and culture."@en
  • "Classic of American literature not only vividly narrates a boat trip Thoreau took with his brother in 1839 but also contains thought-provoking observations on literature, philosophy, Native American and Puritan histories of New England, friends, and a diversity of other topics. Of it, Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "[It] is a book of wonderful merit, which is to go far and last long.""

  • "This book offers a selection of superb photographs by the famous turn-of-the-century photographer Herbert Gleason. Retracing one of Thoreau's early journeys, Gleason produced moving and dramatic pictures of life along the rivers of New England. Originally published in 1986. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These paperback editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable pap."@en
  • "Henry David Thoreau wrote four full-length works, collected here in a single volume. Interweaving natural observation, personal experience, and historical lore, they reveal his brilliance not only as a writer, but as a naturalist, scholar, historian, poet, and philosopher. "A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers" is based on a boat trip taken with his brother from Concord, Massachusetts to Concord, New Hampshire. "Walden" is at once a personal declaration of independence, social experiment, voyage of spiritual discovery, manual of self-reliance, and masterpiece of style. "The Maine Woods" and "Cape Cod" portray landscapes changing irreversibly even as he wrote. The first combines close observation of the unexplored Maine wilderness with a far-sighted plea for conservation; the second is a brilliant and unsentimental account of survival on a barren peninsula in the face of hostile elements, historical change, and natural decay."
  • "In the late summer of 1839, Thoreau and his older brother John made a two-week boat-and-hiking trip from Concord, Massachusetts, to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. After John's sudden death in 1842, Thoreau began to prepare a memorial account of their excursion. He wrote two drafts of this story at Walden Pond, which he continued to revise and expand until 1849, when he arranged for its publication at his own expense. The book's heterodoxy and apparent formlessness troubled its contemporary audience. Modern readers, however, have come to see it as an appropriate predecessor to Walden, with Thoreau's story of a river journey depicting the early years of his spiritual and artistic growth."
