Goffs & its schoolhouse : the historic cultural center of the East Mojave desert

The desert town of Goffs began in 1883 as a siding on the Southern Pacific Railway, then became a junction when the Nevada Southern was built to serve the mining towns to the north. In 1911 a school district was formed, and in 1914 a one-room mission-style schoolhouse was built, which soon came to serve a wide area of the desert for church services, dances and community gatherings. In 1923 the road through Goffs became Route 66, and it became an important stop on the way to Los Angeles. Then in 1931, Highway 66 (now Interstate 40) was realigned further south and the town began to decline. The school was closed in 1937 and fell into disrepair, but has been restored and is now a regional museum.
