Nate Salsbury, at about age 30, poses for a half-length portrait wearing a pirate costume. His costume includes a tattered hat, a full beard and moustache and shaggy hair. Salsbury was an actor and managed the Salsbury Troubadours before taking over as manager of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in 1883. Born in Freeport, Illinois in 1846, Salsbury first met William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody in New York in 1882. The pair joined forces the following year, and Salsbury led Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show to enormous success in the United States and Europe. He died in 1902.
