Art of reciting the qur'an

The aim of the dissertation is to account for the sound of Qur'anic recitation in Egypt today. It is posited that this sound has been shaped by a complex of attitudes about the Qur'an itself, about the art of music in an Islamic context, and by the expectations of the listeners vis-a-vis these attitudes. One of the most important of these, and one which is therefore given a central position in the dissertation, is that which stresses the utter distinctness of the Qur'anic recitation from all forms of music, whether sacred or secular. It is argued that efforts to define and maintain that distinctness play a great role in shaping the sound of Qur'anic recitation.
