  • "Written when Orwell was a struggling writer in his twenties, the book documents his 'first contact with poverty': sleeping in bug-infested hostels and doss houses, working as a dishwasher in Paris, surviving on scraps and cigarette butts, living alongside tramps, a star-gazing pavement artist and a starving Russian ex-army captain. Exposing a shocking, previously hidden world to readers, Orwell gave a human face to poverty, and in doing so, found his voice as a great writer."

  • "This is Orwell's record of a period in the late 1920s when he lived among the tramps of London and Paris. He exposes a shocking, previously hidden world to readers and gives poverty a human face. The book attempts to offer insights, rather than solutions."
  • "This is Orwell's record of a period in the late 1920s when he lived among the tramps of London and Paris. Orwell's publishers initially took the book as a sign of him abandoning Socialism, but this was denied by the author himself. The book attempts to offer insights, rather than solutions."
  • ""Down and Out in Paris and London is the first full-length work by the English author George Orwell, published in 1933. It is a story in two parts on the theme of poverty in the two cities. The first part is a picaresque account of living on the breadline in Paris and the experience of casual labour in restaurant kitchens. The second part is a travelogue of life on the road in and around London from the tramp's perspective, with descriptions of the types of hostel accommodation available and some of the characters to be found living on the margins. Orwell gives it an autobiographical feel by interposing chapters presenting his personal opinions."--from Books in Print."

  • ""George Orwell's first published work, Down and Out in Paris and London, is a vivid, sensitive account of the time he lived as one of the poor in the late twenties. In a bug-infested hotel, surviving only between the pawnbroker and a little teaching and writing, Orwell shocked the middle-class establishment with his observation of the misery, the hopelessness and the despair of the poor of a previously unexplored Paris and London." -- Publisher's description."
  • "George Orwell gives a vivid account of life among the desperately poor in London and Paris."
  • "This unusual fictional account, in good part autobiographical, narrates without self-pity and often with humor the adventures of a penniless British writer among the down-and-out of two great cities. In the tales of both cities we learn some sobering Orwellian truths about poverty and society."@en
