Franz Ferdinand, nephew of the emperor, then becomes the next in line to the throne. Full of liberal notions, he often clashes with his uncle. He becomes infatuated with Sophie, a young Czech countess. At first reticent, the emperor finally consents to their union on condition that their children do not inherit the crown. On 28 June 1914, at Sarajevo, the couple is assassinated by an anarchist--an event that sparked the outbreak of World War I."
