General description of the collection: The Harold K. Johnson collection spans the years 1931 to 1978. The collection documents Johnson's thirty-five years of military service from his attendance at the United States Military Academy to his final assignment as United States Army Chief of Staff. The bulk of the collection documents Johnson's career during his service as Army Chief of Staff from 1964 to 1968 to include official corresponcence about soldiers' welfare issues, his many inspection trips to Vietnam, policy studies, and reports about helicopter mobility. Significant for Johnson's World War II service is a POW journal that Johnson kept in the form of a letter to his wife, Dorothy (Rennix) Johnson. The collection is arranged in series to include: Correspondence (Official, Personal and Retirement), Papers (Official, Personal and Retirement), Speeches, Oral Histories, Printed Material, Photograhs, and Oversize.
