The crowd

Born on the fourth of July, 1900, the future holds unlimited potential for newborn John Sims. But dreams soon fade with the death of his father when John is but a lad. Like many before him, John sets out to make his mark in New York City, but ends up a faceless worker in a large office of a large business. Still he is happy with his fate and meets a young woman named Mary on a blind double date. Things take their course and they marry and live in a small apartment. Soon John is bickering with Mary and finds that he has no love for the in-laws. When the marriage looks like a bust, he finds that Mary is with child and he stays. After 5 years, he has a son and a daughter and the same dead end job. When tragedy strikes, John must find the conviction to continue or lose what little he has left.

  • ""Mary, a working girl, meets John Sims, a dreamer who believes that luck will eventually bring him success. They marry after their first date--to Coney Island--and honeymoon at Niagara Falls. After 5 years and two children, John, who works as a clerk, has not distinguished himself from the rest of the 'crowd.' Winning $500 in a slogan contest brightens their lives, but the death of the younger child causes John to become despondent. He and Mary quarrel; he loses his job and becomes a door-to-door salesman; and Mary follows her family's advice to leave him. John is at the point of committing suicide when consideration for his son prevents him. They go home together to find that Mary could not stay away. (A happy ending, not approved by Vidor, was added: John's knack for slogans gets him a position with an advertising firm. The family prospers and is shown in the final scene gathered around a glittering Christmas tree)"--AFI catalog, 1921-1930."@en
  • "John Sims takes on his father's belief that someday his son is 'going to be big'. However, the reality of John's life is at odds with his belief in his destiny. Visual stylisation at times invokes the theme of the anonymity and regimentation imposed upon the individual by modern urban society. However, this does not negate individual responsibility. Sims is shown to be a man shackled by his avoidance of reality, an inability to recognise that he is ultimately one of the crowd."@en
