Saints, sinners, mothers, and whores an ethnographic study of Catholic Worker Movement beliefs in context

This ethnographic, historical, and religious studies project is based on extensive research on the published works of Dorothy Day and an overview of the Catholic Worker movement from its inception to the practices of its members into the 21 st Century. Part ethnography, part personal memoir, and part theoretical analysis, this study posits that one of the most distinguishing characteristics of Catholic Worker movement beliefs is that their belief processes are enabling events, and people who are committed members of the movement traditionally rely on their beliefs as mechanisms for being, living, walking, and talking as practitioners of this specific Catholic tradition. It is because of their deep-seated beliefs that Catholic Worker movement members (from Dorothy Day to the subjects of this study) engage in these social, linguistic, and cognitive traditions, and these beliefs lead them to act on and practice their ideas and traditions in public and private ways.
