This interview is one in a series with individuals who were actively involved in American Indian studies from the late 1960s to the present time. This series is designed to document the development of American Indian studies, the American Indian Studies Center, and the American Indian Studies Interdepartmental Program at UCLA. The interview begins with a brief autobiographical summary, and continuing on with the establishment and operation of the American Indian Studies Center at UCLA and the Interdepartmental Degree Program in American Indian Studies. Topics include the efforts to establish Native American studies courses at UCLA, the debate on the establishment of ethnic studies in departments vs. interdepartmental programs, the American Indian culture and research journal, the problems finding program directors, faculty and students of Native American ancestry, the history and current state of Native American studies at UCLA.
