Lane's reckless driving leaves her friend Christina, a literary critic, severely injured and hospitalized. Using Christina's research on a reclusive novelist, Lane befriends the novelist's teen-aged daughter and then seduces the father. The daughter seeks out Christina and encourages her to confront her friend.
