Ils campent au départ un solide soldat qui s'affiche comme le sosie de Belmondo. La ressemblance s'estompe au fil des épisodes. Blueberry est une forte tête : teigneux, pas toujours respectueux de la rigueur militaire, indiscipliné, il n'hésite pas parfois à déserter pour remplir au mieux ses missions. Le scénario utilise tous les poncifs du Western américain avec tout ce qu'il faut de rebondissements et de personnages pittoresques (Mc Clure, Angel Face, Red Nick, Chihuahua Pearl etc. sans compter les Indiens qui sont réhabilités par les auteurs, point de vue adopté d'ailleurs dans Cartland."
