Faces (Motion picture : 1968)

The Cassavetes project, tentatively embarked upon in 'Shadows', gained definition in 'Faces', the first in what amounts to a love trilogy formed with 'Husbands' and 'A Woman Under the Influence'. 'Faces' is a raw, edgy comedy of marital breakup thematically and stylistically intense in the Cassavetes' manner with the subjects 'crowded into the frame as they hassle out their existences, straining to escape the bondage of social mannerisms on which they have always depended for their own survival'. Edited to provide a range of perspectives, the ensemble playing is more in the nature of interacting than acting in the conventional sense as Cassavetes strives to put us in touch with states of feeling and being often hovering on the edge of breakdown.
