His quarry turns out to be one of Chabrol's bourgeois savages whose son would also like to be rid of him. Ultimately the story can be viewed in different ways. As a classical revenge story it recalls the fatalistic cinema of Fritz Lang (Rancho Notorious, The Big Heat). Alternatively as a story of guilt and redemption it is more in line with Hitchcock's morally ambiguous "transference of guilt" dramas such as I Confess. Finally the cool deliberation in portrayal of the monstrous Paul and the encouragement of our complicity with the tragically flawed Charles is Lang and Hitchcock plus Chabrol."
