"It brings together the stories of Bob Dubois, a young oil burner repairman fed up with his unfulfilling life in New Hampshire, and Vanise Dorsinville, a Haitian woman who, with her nephew and baby, is fleeing from the brutal injustice and poverty of her homeland. Seeking a new beginning, Bob packs up his family and moves to Florida to live in a cramped trailer and work as a clerk at his fast-talking brother's liquor store. After two devastating tragedies, Bob invests with a friend in a fishing boat venture, smuggling Haitians into the country. It is on this boat that Vanise travels to America in search of her own dreams. And it is there that her fate meets Bob's in a shocking twist of events."
