Seine Poesie und seine bezaubernden Figuren machen ihn noch immer zu einem Erlebnis. In den Jahren 1923 bis 1926 entstanden etwas 250000 Einzelaufnahmen auf einem Tricktisch, fast 96000 Frames fanden für den Film endgültig Verwendung. Lotte Reiniger schnitt ihre vorgezeichneten Figuren aus schwarzem Photokarton mit einer Schere aus und verband die einzelnenen Glieder mit Draht, um sie für die Aufnahmen zu animieren. Als Hintergründe werwendete sie transparente Lagen aus Butterbrotpapier, mit der Schere gestaltete sie kunstvolle Landschaften, Städte oder orientalische Interieurs. Die DVD enthält die vom Deutschen Filmmuseum Frankfurt am Main restaurierte Fassung mit zwei Einspielungen der Filmmusik von Wolfgang Zeller durch das Deutsche Filmorchester Babelsberg unter der Leitung von Helmut Imig und - in einer neu arrangierten Fassung - durch das SChweizer Quintett I Salonisti.
