History of the Eragny Press, 1894-1914

In 1894, Lucien Pissarro established the Eragny Press, named after the Normandy village where his family lived. This book offers a complete account and reassessment of the working practices of the Eragny Press, as well as the impact it had on Pissarro's work as a whole. It begins with a brief survey of Lucien Pissarro's early career and the influences on his book designs and proceeds to tell the story of his association with Charles Ricketts and the establishment of the Eragny Press. The history of the Eragny Press includes a discussion of the influences and artistic theories that are the basis for Pissarro's books and provides a critical reassessment of their significance within the history of the English Arts and Crafts Private Press movement. The work features a detailed descriptive bibliography of all the Eragny Press publications. There are more than 75 illustrations of rare Eragny wood engravings and Eragny designs.
